Austin, Texas has been dethroned as the best retirement city in the United States for LGBT senior citizens.
SeniorAdvice, a free resource for senior citizens in the US, released their 2018 list of LGBT-friendly retirement cities.
Fort Lauderdale, Florida topped the list this year. As the 10th largest city in the state, it boasts mild weather and 20% of the state’s senior population. It also has plenty of gay-friendly businesses and bars.
Last year, Austin came in first while Ft. Lauderdale landed in second.
This is the second-annual list from the organization. Previously, they identified only 15 cities and focused on US cities with populations over 500,000. However, this year they expanded their efforts to include smaller locations.
Nine cities are repeats from 2017, and 11 are newcomers.

Below are the top 20 cities of 2018 and some of the big reasons why they were chosen.

California topped the list with the most number of cities. Four made it from the Golden State, including Los Angeles, Palm Springs, San Diego, and, of course, San Francisco.
Palm Springs came in fifth and is described as a ‘great alternative to San Francisco for those LGBT seniors who seek a more financially reasonable California city to call home’.
It also is the third highest city with the most number of same-sex couples per 1,000 people.
After last year’s November elections, Palm Springs also became the country’s first city with an entirely LGBT council.
How did the cities make it?
SeniorAdvice uses their very own system to score cities — SeniorScore.
It’s described as an ‘un-biased, data-driven algorithm that incorporates over 100 data points from numerous sources’. The sources include Medicare, the census, and other government information.
The SeniorScore is broke down into four categores: health and safety, recreation and leisure, finances, and general quality of life.
Several of the top 20 cities fit into at least one of these categories.
Albuquerque, New Mexico, for example, has lower property taxes (finances) and great weather (quality of life).
